americans. in benghazi, libya, visiting the ruins, charlie what did you see? >> reporter: well, nora, ruins is a good way to describe it, because the place has been decimated. every single building, every single room has been torched, everything inside smashed to pieces or taken out. really, there would have been no place to hide in that compound. when you talk to libyans here you hear the same thing. everybody is heartbroken. they're saddened, shocked by what's happened. they say that they're ashamed of what's happened. they say the ambassador is a personal friend to the libyans. he was here for growth, to show there is a stable future forelibya, ironically, and they held a pro-american rally last night here in benghazi to reinforce those sentiments. so, you know, even days after this event, there is a sense of shock, of anger at those behind it, and the investigation now continues to find out who was behind these killings. the libyans tell me this was directed by al qaeda. this could not have come out of anger from the libyan people. >> charlie, will we see a coordination between the fbi

of the u.s. consulate in the city of benghazi. it happened after hundreds of people converged on the consulate to protest a little-known internet film that ridicules islam. the film was produced in the united states. it was just a year ago that the u.s. helped overthrow libya's dictator moammar qaddafi and christopher stevens was one of the americans on the ground then helping the rebels to victory. we have a team of correspondents on this story and we will go first to david martin who's been talking to his sources at the pentagon. david? >> reporter: good evening, scott. u.s. officials say this was not an out-of-control demonstration but a well-executed attack by a well-armed band of thugs. the u.s. believes that the... this was executed by a group that is either associated with or sympathizes with al qaeda and that they took advantage of that demonstration ainst that anti-muslim film to launch their assault on the anniversary of 9/11. american ambassador chris stevens and information sean smith were in the main building when the attack, which turned into a four-hour gun batt

to benghazi. the president of libya has just talked to charlie. what's he saying? >> reporter: well, good morning to you. just returned from the u.s. consulate where we did meet with the president of the libyan national council. he confirmed four arrests have been made. he's confident there will be more. you're confident the men behind the, the people behind this will be caught. why? what makes you so confident. >> because everyone is determined to. >> reporter: everyone is determined to. how far identified the group responsible for this? >> too early. >> reporter: have you made move towards the suspects responsible? we understand there's a no fly zone in place at benghazi airport. can you tell us more about that. >> any attempts by perpetrators. >> reporter: now the u.s. state department has released the names of the four men killed in the attack at the consulate in addition to the u.s. ambassador christopher stevens and sean smith. they confirmed the deaths of tyrone woods a former navy s.e.a.l. who served multiple tours of duty in iraq and afghanistan and glenn dougherty. >> secretary

definitive conclusions. our assessment at the present is in fact it began spontaneously in benghazi as a reaction to what had transpired hours earlier in cairo where, of course, as you know, there was a violent protest outside of our embassy sparked by this hateful video. but soon after that spontaneous protest began outside of our consulate in benghazi, we believe that it looks like extremist elements, individuals, joined in that effort with heavy weapons of the sort that are, unfortunately, readily now available in libya post-revolution. and that it spun from there into something much, much more violent. >> schieffer: but you do not agree with him that this was something that had been plotted out several months ago? >> we do not-- we do not have information at present that leads us to conclude this was premeditated or preplanned. >> schieffer: do you agree or disagree with him that al qaeda had some part in this? >> well, we'll have to find out that out. i think it's clear there were extremist elements that joined in and escalated the violence. whether they were al qaeda affiliate
